What are all-on-4 dental implants?

All-on-4 implants offer a solution for individuals who have lost multiple teeth. This advanced dental technique uses between four to six implants to support a full-arch prosthesis, providing a reliable, comfortable and natural-looking alternative to traditional dentures.

The all-on-4 treatment process

Consultation with your dentist

Before starting treatment, you will meet with your dentist. This is your opportunity to ask questions about all-on-4 dental implants.

Your dentist will assess whether you are suitable for treatment using scans and a full clinical examination. They will also check whether any teeth need to be removed first. If you are suitable, your dentist will explain the process and create a personalised treatment plan.

Fitting the implants

The procedure involves placing a minimum of four implants in your jaw at specific angles - typically the back implants are placed at an angle and the front implants vertically. This positioning helps maximise support and stability.

At Tavistock Dental, we may place more than four implants where appropriate to ensure the strongest and most predictable outcome.

Attaching abutments and temporary teeth

After placing the implants, small connectors called abutments are fitted. These link the implants to your new teeth.

In most cases, temporary teeth can be fitted on the same day, allowing you to leave the practice with a functional and confident smile.

Healing and final teeth

You will attend follow-up appointments so we can monitor healing. Once the implants have fully integrated with the bone - usually after several months - your final, long-term teeth will be fitted.

Nervous about All-on-4 treatment? We can help

It's completely understandable to feel anxious about a treatment of this scale. All-on-4 is a surgical procedure, and for many patients the thought of implant surgery is daunting - especially if you already struggle with dental anxiety.

At Tavistock Dental, IV sedation is available for patients who need a little more support. Administered by Frances Carling-Thom, our experienced sedation dentist, IV sedation puts you in a deeply relaxed state throughout your treatment. You'll remain conscious and able to respond, but you'll feel completely at ease and will have little to no memory of the procedure afterwards.

For many of our nervous patients, knowing that sedation is available is enough to take that first step. If this sounds like you, we'd encourage you to get in touch - even just for a conversation.

How are all-on-4 implants different from traditional implants?

All-on-4 implants allow a full arch of teeth to be supported using fewer implants. This can reduce treatment time and, in many cases, avoid the need for more complex procedures such as bone grafting.

They also allow for same-day temporary teeth, meaning you do not have to go without teeth during treatment.

Benefits of all-on-4 dental implants

All-on-4 implants offer several advantages:

Can all-on-4 replace bridges or dentures?

Yes, all-on-4 dental implants can replace both bridges and dentures. While these traditional options can restore missing teeth, they do not provide the same level of stability or long-term benefits as implant-supported solutions.

At your consultation, we will discuss all available options with you and recommend the most suitable treatment based on your needs.

Frequently asked questions in Bloomsbury, WC1H

Am I suitable for all-on-4 dental implants?

Most patients who have multiple missing teeth or failing teeth may be suitable for all-on-4 treatment. Suitability depends on your bone density, oral health and medical history, which we assess during your consultation.

Does all-on-4 treatment hurt?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, and sedation can be provided if needed. You should not feel pain during treatment, although some mild discomfort during healing is normal.

How long does the all-on-4 treatment take?

In many cases, implants and temporary teeth can be fitted on the same day. The full process, including healing and final teeth, typically takes several months.

Will my new teeth look natural?

Yes - your new teeth are carefully designed to suit your facial features and preferences. We work closely with dental technicians to ensure a natural and confident result.

How long do all-on-4 implants last?

With proper care and regular dental visits, all-on-4 implants can last many years. Good oral hygiene and maintenance are key to long-term success.
