What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the closest replacements we have for teeth. They are fixed into the mouth like our teeth to help chew. The most suitable material for tooth implants to be made from is titanium. Titanium has been used successfully for medical treatment for decades. It is very biocompatible and safe.

Dental implants were first used in the 1960s. Since then, they have quickly become the first choice for replacing missing teeth. Strictly speaking, dental implants are a ‘screw’ which acts as a root. Crowns, bridges and dentures can be attached over the top of dental implants to help restore missing teeth.

What Are The Benefits of Dental Implants?

  • No more worrying that your dentures may become loose in company or even worse, fall out!
  • You can avoid having a sunken appearance as a result of losing a number of teeth.
  • The replacement tooth looks natural
  • It’s extremely strong,
  • It will give you the confidence to smile
  • You can eat any food that you would with your regular teeth.
  • No more worrying missing teeth

What happens during the treatment?

Initially, an assessment is carried out with x-rays and 3D scans to establish that the mouth is in sufficiently good health to take a dental implant. Any issues will be treated in advance to ensure the best chance of success. We are meticulous in our planning thus ensuring you understand what will happen each step of the way.

The dental implant is placed into the jawbone and left for a period to integrate with the surrounding bone. Once this has occurred, a crown or bridge or denture can be custom made to fix onto the implant that has been placed, depending on the situation, this process can take between 6 weeks to 6 months.

How Long Is The Treatment

A single tooth can be replaced in less than an hour and all of your teeth can be replaced in a day. With careful planning, we can get treatment done as efficiently as possible. Many of our patients return back to work straight after.

Is It Painful?

No it isn’t! The procedure is done using a local anaesthetic and no more discomfort should be felt than during a standard filling. We pride ourselves on delivering painless treatment.

We also offer sedation if you require. Patients normally return to work etc immediately after.

What Type Of Implants Do You Use?

We use the Ankylos implant system from Dentsply Implants. Ankylos implants have been used for over 25 years. It is one of the most established high quality systems in the world used by many international top dental implant surgeons. The Ankylos system is imitated by many recently established implant systems.

It has many carefully designed features which help increase the success rate of its use. At Tavistock Dental, we have chosen to use this brand of implant as we believe it is the best implant to use for our patients. It is what we would want to be used for ourselves and our families.

Who can have dental implants?

Everyone can have implants done. Sometimes, preparatory work may need to be done before implants can be placed to avoid dental implants problems. Please contact us and we can let you know if we can do implants for you.

Can Dentures Be Fixed To Teeth Implants?

In some cases, dental implants can be used to stabilise loose dentures. The denture still needs to be removed for cleaning but you can eat food as normal.

Dentures fixed with dental implants can be a lower cost option than having separate dental implants to replace your missing teeth. Dentures fixed with dental implants are one of our most popular treatments.

What are The Effects of Smoking with Dental Implants

Smoking can cause mouth cancer, stain teeth and cause gum disease to worsen. Unfortunately smoking reduces the success rate of dental implant treatment. People who smoke tend to heal slower and dental implants do not integrate so well compared to people who don’t smoke.

In an ideal world, we would ask our patients to stop smoking before dental implants are placed. Stopping smoking also has other health benefits. Tooth implants can be done in patients who smoke and they can work well without any dental implants problems.

What is the cost of dental implants?

It is very difficult to give you a price on dental implants without seeing your mouth, and discussing your challenges and goals. This is why we offer a completely free consultation so that we can see exactly what you need and therefore quote a complete and accurate price.

As you can understand everyone is unique so each treatment is tailored to each patient. We aim to be transparent with our fees. Once you have had a consultation, you will receive a detailed report giving you an accurate plan with costs – no hidden extras.

We use the best materials and are confident we offer the best value for money.

Do you offer finance?

We offer interest free payment plans so you can spread the cost of your treatment. You can also pay-as-you-go or some patients prefer to pay all at the beginning. You can contact us for more details on finance options.
